Attachment-Focused EMDR

Trauma-Focused Focus: Trauma Processing + Attachment Repair Medium to long-term Individual

Core Mechanism

Bilateral stimulation within an attuned relational context activates the attachment system while processing early wounds, enabling internalization of a secure base through both the therapeutic relationship and imaginal resource figures

Ontology

The self as shaped by early relational deficits — not primarily by discrete traumatic events but by chronic failures of attunement — that require both trauma processing and relational repair

Therapeutic Voice

"Let's bring in your nurturing figure. Can you feel their presence with you? Stay with that, and follow the taps."

View of the Person

A relational being whose capacity for self-regulation was shaped by early attachment experiences — healing requires both processing of stored trauma and internalization of a new relational template

Evidence

Not separately listed in guidelines; covered under EMDR recommendations

No RCTs specific to AF-EMDR; draws on EMDR evidence base

No independent meta-analyses; embedded in broader EMDR research

Particularly suited to clients whose early neglect or attachment disruption means standard EMDR protocols may be too activating or feel too clinical. Parnell's modifications — including the extensive use of nurturing and protective figures in resource installation — draw directly from attachment theory (Bowlby, Ainsworth, Main). Growing clinical use, especially with complex trauma populations. Requires solid EMDR foundation plus attachment theory training.

Blind Spots

Limited independent research base; departure from standard EMDR fidelity raises questions for purists; requires both EMDR and attachment theory competence; some modifications not empirically validated independently

Contraindications

Same as standard EMDR plus: clients without developmental trauma where standard EMDR is sufficient, severe disorganized attachment with active dissociative identity disorder without stabilization

Training

Completion of EMDR Basic Training (Part 1 & 2) required as prerequisite. Then AF-EMDR specific training through Parnell Institute (Laurel Parnell).

Parnell Institute — AF-EMDR certification pathway. Requires EMDR basic training (already level 3) + AF-EMDR specific training + supervision.

EMDR basic: 50+ hrs; AF-EMDR specific: 20–30 hrs additional; supervision additional

$2K–4K total (EMDR basic + AF-EMDR training)

How does Attachment-Focused EMDR differ from standard EMDR?

Show answer

Parnell modified the standard protocol to prioritize the therapeutic relationship as the healing mechanism, de-emphasize structured phases in favor of relational attunement, and integrate resource installation and nurturing figure work to address early attachment deficits.
